It sounds like science fiction, but this is Dubai, so of course, it is becoming real.
Meet “THE LOOP”—the craziest infrastructure project we have ever seen.
1. The World’s Longest “Green Corridor” 🌿
This isn’t just a bike lane. It is a 93-kilometer climate-controlled highway that will wrap around the entire city.
- The Concept: A glass tube elevated above the ground, filled with trees, plants, and purified air.
- The Temperature: It is fully air-conditioned year-round. It doesn’t matter if it is 50°C outside; inside, it is always perfect cycling weather.
2. The Floor Powers the Lights ⚡
This is the part that sounds like a movie. The floor of THE LOOP creates its own electricity.
- Kinetic Paving: The running tracks use “kinetic floors” made from recycled car tires.
- How it Works: Every time you step or run, your weight compresses the floor slightly. That movement generates energy which is harvested to power the lights and sensors. You are literally powering the city with your footsteps.
3. The “20-Minute City” Vision ⏱️
Why build this? It is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The goal is to turn Dubai into a “20-minute city”—meaning over 80% of residents should be able to reach their daily needs (work, school, shops) within a 20-minute walk or bike ride.
4. More Than Just a Commute 🥗
It’s not just for getting to work. THE LOOP is designed to be a destination itself.
- Vertical Farms: The structure will include vertical farms growing local food inside the highway.
- Wellness Hotels: There are plans for “wellness hotels” and fitness centers integrated directly into the track.
